The American Board schools in Turkey are committed to the concept of bilingualism and biculturalism among their students, faculty and staff; that is, to provide Turkish children with a high quality English language education with certain subjects taught in Turkish as required by the Ministry of Education. In order to create an environment in which bilingualism flourishes our schools provide students, teachers and support staff with ample language learning opportunities:
For Students
a full program of English language studies from Prep to Lise 12,
an appropriate range of extracurricular activities conducted in English.
For Teachers (English speaking)
a two-week language and cultural orientation program each August before school opens,
additional opportunities for teachers to continue Turkish lessons throughout the first year,
a mentoring program allowing them the opportunity to work with experienced Turkish and English teachers so as to more quickly understand the Turkish educational system and to master pedagogical strategies appropriate to teaching in a Turkish school.
For Teachers and Staff (Turkish speaking)
English lessons to help them acquire a basic mastery ofconversational and “work-place” language skills;
an orientation to American educational practices so that there is a basic understanding of Americans and American teaching styles.
